Cancer affects 350,000 people per year in France and is
responsible for 146,000
deaths, making it the leading cause of mortality. The fight against cancer is a major public health challenge.
In fact, its diversity makes it difficult to understand: there are over 200 different types of cancer. Despite the many faces of this disease, the research of the last thirty years have helped define some common cancers.
General mechanisms have been identified, allowing to understand the evolution of the cancer process. The understanding of how cancers allows designing more effective therapeutic strategies and to define more specific targets for anticancer therapies of tomorrow.

This report presents the main mechanisms of cancer recently proposed by two world experts in oncology: Douglas Hanahan and Robert Weinberg, in the prestigious journal Cell. We will consider these mechanisms across the cell, where oncogenesis begins until the tissue level where we are witnessing the establishment of advanced stages of oncogenesis.
A dossier produced by Grégory Le Segala, PhD in cancer research center in Toulouse Cancer of the team of Dr. Marc Poirot. His research project is firstly to investigate the involvement of sterol metabolism in the effects of a drug used against breast cancer, tamoxifen. On the other hand, it seeks to characterize the mechanism of action of a new antitumor natural molecule, dendrogenine A.
Breast cancer :
It was discovered in France in 2010, 70,000 new cases of breast cancer. They were 7,000 in 1975, 35,000 in 1995, 42,000 in 2000, 46,000 in 2005 ... This localization of cancer annually kills about 12,000 women in France, unfortunately increasingly young, before and around 50 years. It is the leading cause of death among women aged 35 to 55 years. It represents about 20% of their deaths.
